HH5K Run 2015 — Race to Feed the Hungry


5K logoThis year Hunger Hike 2015 offers an opportunity for runners to also be a part of the fight against hunger — the HH5K Run — on Saturday, September 19th, one day prior to Hunger Hike (traditional 3K Walk). The HH5K Run is open to runners of all ages and abilities who share a common goal: Fighting Hunger!

The annual HH5K Run will convene at White Horse Christian Center (1780 Cumberland Avenue, West Lafayette) with start/finish in the Celery Bog Nature Area. The 5K route allows participants to run while a scenic route through West Lafayette in early autumn.


Advanced Registration is encouraged but race day walk-ups are welcome.

All HH5K Run proceeds directly support the Lafayette Urban Ministry food assistance programs including the St. John’s/LUM Food Pantry, Food Finders Food Bank Inc., and St. Thomas Aquinas’ Haitian Ministry including the Haiti Water Purification Project.

Hunger Hike 2015Mark your calendars for Hunger Hike 2015 – Hike to Feed the Hungry


Hunger Hike is an annual community fundraising event whose mission is to raise the awareness of and make a difference in the fight against hunger. Hunger Hike is open to participants of all ages and abilities who share a common goal: Fighting Hunger!

The Hunger Hike keystone event is the opening ceremonies on Sunday — immediately followed by the traditional Hunger Hike 3K Walk. Hunger Hike also includes a 5K Run on Saturday morning.


The details of the Hunger Hike events are as follows:

Time: Noon – check-in; 2 p.m. – Hunger Hike 3K Walk starts

All Hunger Hike proceeds directly support the Lafayette Urban Ministry food assistance programs including the St. John’s/LUM Food Pantry; Food Finders Food Bank, Inc.; and St. Thomas Aquinas’ Haitian Ministry including the Haiti Water Purification Project.

Sharon Versyp is the head women’s basketball coach at Purdue University; and Dave Kucik is the head coach of the Purdue University Rowing program including the Purdue men’s & women’s Crew Teams.

Coaches Versyp and Kucik are both passionate about fighting hunger and are a great role models for us all. They both have built strong programs for their student-athletes while emphasizing the responsibility to serve the neediest in your community. They create opportunities for their student-athletes to raise awareness and more importantly raise money for important programs like Hunger Hike. They also lead by example — engaging personally in the community to have a positive impact.

Coaches Versyp and Kucik will kick off Hunger Hike with words of inspirational for the participants on Sunday, September 21 — and the Purdue women’s basketball team and the Purdue Crew Team will lead the Hunger Hikers to the trail head.

Be a Hunger Hike HERO


This year everyone is encouraged to be a Hunger Hike HERO.

To be a Hunger Hike Hero, individuals must do the following:hungerhike_HERO

  • Participate in the traditional Hunger Hike on Sunday, September 21
  • Raise $50 or more for Hunger Hike
  • Run in the HH5K Run on Saturday, September 20th

If you participate in both events on Hunger Hike weekend and raise at least $50 — you will not only get two T-shirts and water bottle — you will also be recognized as a Hunger Hike HERO.

Take the challenge—Run, Hike, Raise money to Fight Hunger — and become a Hunger Hike HERO!

Be a part of the annual Hunger Hike 5K Run and Race to Feed the Hungry. The HH5K Run is open to runners of all ages and abilities who share a common goal: Fighting Hunger!

The HH5K Run will convene in Cumberland Park with start/finish on the beautiful grassy field of the park. The course is mostly flat and paved with a short part on the trails in the woods of Cumberland Park. The 5K route allows participants to run while a scenic route through West Lafayette in early autumn.

Joe Micon, LUM executive director, hosted a media event at the new location of the first-ever, Hunger Hike 5K Run — Munger Park. Due to the cresting Wabash River, the Wabash Heritage Trail is not yet ready for our spring 5K event. The Hunger Hike 5K Run planning committee worked with the City of Lafayette — and the decision was made to move the race to Munger Park (3505 Greenbush Street, Lafayette). Due to the recent rain —

the Wabash River is too high & the Heritage Trail is not ready.

Due to the cresting Wabash River, the Wabash Heritage Trail is not yet ready for our spring 5K event. BUT even floods and torrential rains will not stop our efforts to Fight Hunger in our Community. The Hunger Hike 5K Run planning committee has been in discussions all weekend with the City of Lafayette — and the decision has been made to move the race to Munger Park (3505 Greenbush Street, Lafayette).
